Baby Powder– it has a long standing association with sweet smelling, dry, freshly bathed and diapered babies.
I certainly used it 30 plus years ago on my little baby boys.
Well, here’s what we know about Baby Powder today….
Baby Powder contains TALC, a very fine substance that can be used as a “dry” lubricant. Talc is very much like asbestos in its chemical make-up. Most of us are aware of at least one person who has a deadly respiratory disease due to living or working in a building that was fire-proofed with asbestos.
Besides Baby Powders, talc is used in “feminine” powders, cosmetics (like foundation powders), and as a dry lubricant for condoms! Talc makes your skin feel slippery smooth, and more!
How does it do that? Well, it clogs the pores that secrete necessary body fluids. The fact that Talc is similar to asbestos is quite alarming when you consider that it is most often used on baby’s bottoms and adult genitals…
Years ago it was used as a dry lubricant in surgeon’s latex gloves, making them easy to slide on and off. As early as then, in the 1930s, talc was implicated to cases of post-operative granulomatous peritonitis and fibrous adhesions.
Talc on condoms “may result in fallopian tube fibrosis with resultant infertility. Question raised by Doctors Kasper and Chandler in JAMA 3/15/95…” Nutrition Health Review, n73p8(1)
From U.S. News and World Report, March 17, 1997 v122n10p77(1) “A possible tie between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, long suspected because of talc’s chemical similarity to asbestos, was strongly supported…. when a study found a higher risk of the cancer among women who dusted themselves with talc or used feminine deodorant sprays. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, found that women who used talcum powder in the genital area had an increased ovarian cancer risk of 60% and women who used feminine deodorant sprays had a 90% increased risk.” However, the FDA’s ’scientific workshop’ on the issue didn’t establish enough evidence for a causal link and they didn’t even issue a consumer warning.
You may also have heard about links of talc to urinary tract disorders. The FDA is still not convinced. You don’t have to worry about your surgeon, however because talc is no longer used as a glove-donning powder. It is still found in cosmetics, powders and condoms. I’m a granny and I want the safest, most healthful products and information to pass on to my grandchild. These are some of the items that I keep Alyza stocked with (you won’t find SLS, SLES, Anti-freeze or other possible carcinogens in any of these, I promise).
