And just to carry on with our toxicology report….
Have you heard the buzz about Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)? This is probably one of the more common environmental toxins that has hit our awarenesses.
What is SLS?
SLS is a chemical used to break down the surface tension of water. It is called a ’surfactant’ in this role, and some of its industrial uses include:
But, as you know by now, it is not restricted to these products– SLS is also in shampoo, liquid soaps, conditioners, cleansers, AND toothpaste. Shockingly, even toothpastes that claim to be pure and natural contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. (eg., Tom’s of Maine) It would seem that people want the fluff (the foam) and are willing to put up with canker sores (one of the spinoffs of the SLS).
From the Journal of the American College of Toxicology, Vol. 2, No. 7, 1983, you can learn the following:
Check the side of your toothpaste. Check the side of your shampoo. Do you want this toxin on your skin? On your baby’s skin? Did you know that many medications recommend putting the tablet or capsule under the tongue (sublingually) for the fast absorption– usually less than a minute– just think about what you are doing with the SLS when you (or your child) swallows some fo the toothpaste you have just brushed with?
Don’t wait for any studies to be done– that is pretty unlikely. DO exercise good common sense.
Looking for safe and healthy products WITHOUT either Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) in them?
I’m a granny and I want the safest, most healthful products and information to pass on to my grandchild. These are some of the items that I keep Alyza stocked with (you won’t find SLS, SLES, Anti-freeze or other possible carcinogens in any of these, I promise).
