-Deadly Decadence– the Chemicals in Your Baby’s Bubblebath II (Propylene Glycol)

Filed under: Uncategorized @ February 15, 2007 5:49 pm by healthiacynthia

Hi there

Yesterday I talked about the chemical called Diethanolamine–DEA– (Cocamide and Lauramide) and how DEA is just the tip of the toxin/carcinogen iceberg for consumers of cosmetics, shampoos, bubble baths, lotions, soaps, laundry and dishwashing detergents.

I remember when my husband identified Propylene Glycol– really, Anti-freeze– being an ingredient in a yummy processed soy bacon product that we had happily adopted in the period between vegetarianism and veganism… a sort of ‘bridge’ if you will. I was incredulous AND angry– first, at the company for slipping it into the food, and secondarily at my husband for discovering that it was in there– naturally we wouldn’t be eating that tasty product anymore.

The American Heritage Encyclopedia Dictionary identifies Propylene Glycol as: “a colorless, viscous, hygroscopic liquid CH3CHOHCH2OH, used in anti-freeze solutions, in hydraulic fluids, and as a solvent. It is also called ‘propanediol’”.

Go check your labels and see if you don’t find it on any of these products, under your sink, in your bathroom cabinet, or in your garage:

  • antifreeze
  • brake and hydraulic fluid
  • de-icer
  • Paints and Coatings
  • Floor Wax
  • Laundry Detergents
  • Pet Food
  • Tobacco
  • Cosmetics
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Lotions
  • Processed Foods
  • Propylene Glycole is used as a humectant– a substance that makes it easier to maintain moisture content, often extending the shelf-life of products by keeping them from drying out. Ever wonder why that year old pet food is still chewy, even though the stuff you made for Bowzer last week is dry as…well…a bone? And, wow, putting propylene glycole in cosmetics adds to that nice “moisturized” feeling in your skin. Propylene Glycol is in baby wipes (look down the page for a recipe for a natural “baby wipes” solution).

It might interest you to know that Propylene Glycol shows up in the following dis-eases: contact dermatitis, liver abnormalities and kidney damage; also, Propylene Glycol can stop skin cell growth in human tests and can damage cell membranes creating rashes and dry skin.
    Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Several articles have been written about the American Academy of Dermatologists’ product review showing that propylene glycol causes burning of the skin– even very low levels of concentration in a product.
The American Academy of Dermatologists, Inc.; January 1991

Do you want to risk experiencing:respiratory distress through inhalation of propylene glycol? Eye irriation? Nausea? Headaches and vomiting? Do you want your young child to experience any of these symptoms?
    Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

The scary thing about Propylene Glycol is that it may be absorbed through the skin– studies show that there is a residue throughout the body after contact with skin. The Material Data Safety Data Sheets warn to “avoid contact with skin”. And yet we use it as a toothpaste or a soap on our child? Does that make sense?Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

The Big Question is, “Do you have to wait on the results of a study to decide whether to continue using toxins like DEA and Propylene Glycol in your home”? So far, no long-range research have been undertaken. Therefore, we don’t really know what happens in our bodies over time — but if Propylene Glycol keeps things from dehydrating on the store shelf, would it do the same thing in our cells? Is it possible that it affects our bodies at a cellular level? What do you think? Do you need a ’scientific study’ to verify that– or would you feel comfortable in making other choices, and leaving the Propylene Glycol off your shopping list?

Just in case you want to take postive action right now, here is the recipe for those natural, toxin-free Baby Wipes I told you about:

How to Make 100% Chemical Free Baby Wipes:

  • Cut a roll of soft paper towels in half to make two small rolls (would be good if they are the unbleached, recycled variety you can buy at SuperStore in Canada).
  • Take the core out of one small roll and put it into an airtight container.
  • Heat 1 1/2 Cups of distilled water to body temperature and mix in the following:
  • 2 tsp. KidScents Bath Gel
  • and

  • the Island Dreaming blogsite.)

As I mentioned in my last blog, I am going to talk about some of the 125 ingredients that you actually can remove from your family’s bath, medicine cabinet, sports’ bag, cosmetic case, and life! Maybe your Mom didn’t know about Propylene Glycol– but you do. You can make informed choices that weren’t available back in the 60s, 70s, or even the early 90s.

I’m a granny and I want the safest, most healthful products and information to pass on to my grandchild. These are some of the items that I keep Alyza stocked with (you won’t find Anti-freeze or other possible carcinogens in any of these, I promise).
