-Deadly Decadence– the Chemicals in Your Baby’s Bubblebath (DEA)

Filed under: Uncategorized @ February 16, 2007 4:42 pm by healthiacynthia

Back in 1998, This Morning on CBS reported on a study from the US Department of Health and Human Services’ National Toxicology Program
that rocked the world of cosmetics and personal care product industries.

A common ingredient found in soaps, detergents and surfacants, called Diethanolamine, or DEA for short, when applied to the skin showed clear evidence of carcinogenic (i.e., causing or contributing to, cancer) activity.

“Diethanolamine was selected for evaluation because its large-scale production and pattern of use indicate a potential for widespread human exposure.” (NTP TR 478- US Department of Health and Human Services’ National Toxicology Program; study concluded in 1997).

I want you to go and get one of your bottles of shampoo, conditioner, bubblebath, lotion, facial make-up, liquid hand-soap, laundry or diswashing detergent. Look under the list of ingredients. Do you see a listing for Cocamide DEA or lauramide DEA?? That’s the one! And it is only one of about 125 ingredients that we are bringing into our home that contains carcinogenic properties– do you want that for yourself? Do you want that for your baby?

So, you are asking yourself… this DEA is an ingredient that we have used for decades, day after day, and just now I’ve become aware of its hazards to me and my dear ones? How come????

Well, back in the 1970s there were studies that showed that smoking causes cancer…. but did that shut down the cigarette companies? Back in 1938, when the FDA published guidelines telling about suitable levels of DEA for human use, not much was known about what would/could happen with long-time daily use. It is possible that they didn’t even think about what effect there would be if DEA was absorbed through the skin.

Interestingly, DEA was considered a toxin in industrial applications long before the study in the 1990’s showed that it was harmful to personal care. The cosmetic industry has a response something like: “DEA has not been proven to be harmful to humans” or “our products are formulated with FDA guidelines.”

In “The Safe Shopper’s Bible”, the author, Dr. Samuel Epstein, has quite a different response! He has issued a stern warning stating that products containing DEA can cause or lead to cancer-causing activity. Dr. Epstein is no ‘lightweight’ in the scientific and health community– he is the Founder of The American Coalition to Prevent Cancer and considered the world’s foremost authority on toxicology (the study of poisons). He points out that many products even neglect to list DEA in their ingredient menu!

Over the next few blogs I am going to talk about some of the 125 ingredients that you actually can remove from your family’s bath, medicine cabinet, sports’ bag, cosmetic case, and life! Maybe your Mom didn’t know about DEA– but you do. You can make informed choices that weren’t available back in the 60s, 70s, or even the early 90s.

I’m a granny and I want the safest, most healthful products and information to pass on to my grandchild. These are some of the items that I keep Alyza stocked with (you won’t find DEA or other carcinogens in any of these, I promise). (Click on the picture to find out more, and to order:)
